MVBM (Mid-Voltage Battery Module) – Exchange Service
Volvo mild hybrid models • 48V mild hybrid system • Integrated Starter Generator
The MVBM (Mid-Voltage Battery Module) consists of a battery, an internal control module and an internal mechanical relay and fuse. Its purpose is to store energy from regenerative braking and supply the Integrated Starter Generator Module (ISGM) — acting as a starter motor or boosting the internal combustion engine. The MVBM communicates primarily with the Engine Control Module (ECM) via CAN and is directly connected to the SRS module.
Common Fault Symptoms
- Vehicle immobilised with no obvious warning messages on the dashboard
- Car left unused for several weeks and will no longer start
- 12V battery repeatedly discharging – the mild hybrid battery is no longer recharging it
- Vehicle dead after extended bodywork or storage where the car was not kept properly closed
- Mild hybrid system unavailable warning
- MVBM DTCs stored – internal fault, communication fault with ECM, or voltage out of range
Exchange Service Summary
This is an exchange service. You send us your old, faulty MVBM and we supply a fully charged, tested replacement unit programmed to your vehicle using your VIN. Please include your VIN when ordering so the replacement can be matched to your car before dispatch.
The replacement MVBM is plug and play — no additional dealer programming is required after fitting.
⚠️ Important: A discharged or failed MVBM can leave the vehicle completely immobilised with no clear message on the dashboard. This is a known issue on mild hybrid Volvos left unused for a few weeks or during bodywork. Our exchange unit is pre-programmed and ready to install.
